About us

Welcome to Avallon Lodges — a place with deep family roots, shaped by generations of hard work, hospitality, and a love for the countryside. Our lodges are situated on Winsdon Farm, a fourth-generation family farm originally purchased in 1912 by my great-grandfather from The Duke of Bedford’s Estate. Farming has always been at the heart of our family life, and my father, Joseph, proudly continued the tradition of dairy farming for many years. His dedicated and success as a farmer were remarkable, yet changing times meant the farm needed to diversity and explore alternative income streams.

Hospitality was already part of our family history. Bed & Breakfast accommodation had long been established within the farmhouse at Winsdon Farm, so opening Avallon Lodges felt like a natural next step. My parents, Joseph and Loveday, wanted to create something sustainable that would sit comfortably within the surrounding farm landscape. That vision led to the introduction of our distinctive Norwegian lodges — carefully chosen for their natural appearance, warmth, and character.

Over the years, the farm itself has also evolved. What was once a dairy farm is now home to around 1,000 sheep, continuing our family’s strong connection to the land and farming life. We also tucked a little man made lake into the heart of the farm, which has become a popular spot for coarse fishing and adds to the peaceful surroundings guests can enjoy during their stay. In the early days, it truly was a family effort. My father would often be found stripping beds and helping wherever needed, while my mother managed the cleaning and looked after guests with the welcoming hospitality she was known for.

As the middle child of Joseph and Loveday, I have been involved with the lodges for as long as I can remember, helping with maintenance, repairs, and the day-to-day running of the site. In 2010, I took over the management of Avallon Lodges, continuing the family tradition of providing a peaceful and welcoming place for guests to enjoy the countryside.

Today, Avallon Lodges remains very much a family run business, built on generations of care, hard work, and pride in what we do. We hope that when you stay with us, you feel part of that story.

Further information

What time can I arrive and when do I need to leave?
Your lodge will be ready from 4pm, giving us time to prepare everything perfectly for your stay. On departure day, we ask that you check out at 10am so the next guests can enjoy the same warm welcome.

What is the best way to find you?
We’re tucked away in peaceful countryside (which is part of the magic), so we recommend using Google Maps or What3words for the smoothest journey.
Tip - head towards Launceston, rather than following the narrow shortcut, your car (and nerves) will thank you. Keep an eye out for our signs!

Are the lodges fully equipped?
Each lodge comes with fully equipped kitchens ready for slow breakfasts and relaxed dinners.
All bedding is provided.
We ask that you bring a few everyday consumable like washing up liquid, toiletries and extra toilet rolls to make your stay seamless.
Please also bring your own towels - as an eco-conscious site, laundry is done using solar power - so bringing your own towels helps keep things sustainable.
As we are tucked away in the countryside, which means peace, quiet …… and fewer nearby shops.
The nearest supermarkets, pubs, and restaurants are a short drive away, we highly recommend bringing your food essentials with you, especially for your first evening.
Many guests love settling straight into their lodge, and enjoying a relaxed meal without needing to head back out.

We welcome dogs at Avallon Lodges, but ask that they are well socialised, child friendly, and able to remain clam and quiet so all guests can enjoy a relaxing holiday.

Do I need to plan activities in advance?
With 200 acres of countryside, a lake, and peaceful walks, many guests find they don’t want to leave at all. But if you do, the coast and local attractions are just a short drive away. Specialised activities like horse riding and Surf lessons are best arranged in advance, especially around peak season.

Each lodge includes a Blu-Ray player, so feel free to bring your favourite films for a cosy night in. There is a small collection of Blue-Ray’s in each lodge. No streaming services are offered and TV’s are not Smart TV’s. We strongly recommend downloading some of favourites on your device before you arrive.

Why is it so dark at night?
We are lucky to be in a dark skies area, meaning minimal outdoor lighting and maximum stargazing.
